Free groceries. Two words that sound great with the rising cost of food. That's what Kroger plans to offer, if you choose to exchange your tax rebate or refund check for a Kroger gift card.

The program starts on May 2nd. We called local Krogers, and they tell us the deal is being accepted in Southwest Virginia.

Here's how it will work. Go to your local Kroger, present your Kroger card, and exchange your economic stimulus check or tax refund, for a Kroger gift card. The amount of free groceries you receive depends on the amount of money. But it essentially works out to 10% free groceries or gas.

For the $300 tax rebate - You'll receive a Kroger gift card worth $330.00

For $600 - You'll receive two Kroger gift cards for $330 each, which totals $660.

For $1,200 - You'll receive four Kroger gift cards for $330 each, which totals $1,320.

“Grocery bills represent a significant expenditure for the average American family. In fact, the average family of four spends between $105 and $235 per week* on food purchased at a store and prepared at home,” said David B. Dillon, Kroger chairman and chief executive officer, in a news release. “Kroger’s program allows our customers to stretch their grocery dollars further. We are excited about the opportunity to touch the lives of millions of families across the country by helping them extend their household budgets through this special program.”

The program runs through July 31st. It's limited to one offer per household, with a limit of $1,200.
