Babcock & Wilcox’s Nuclear Operations Group has been awarded a nearly $16 million contract by the Department of Energy to process uranium.
The company will be recovering and purifying uranium from scrap materials housed at the Y-12 National Security Complex. The contract is part of the Department of Energy’s initiative to remove legacy highly-enriched uranium materials from DOE facilities.
The five-year, $15.8 million contract will start in the middle of this year and last through 2016.
No new hires are being made due to the new contract.
The work will be done in the Lynchburg facility on Mt. Athos Road. the company employs about 2,400 people in the area.
