Women, migraines, and brain damage

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Women who suffer frequent migraines may have an increased risk for progressive brain damage.

A study by researchers in the Netherlands compared 28 women who suffered migraines, to 28 women without the headaches.

All participants underwent MRI brain scans. They found women with migraines had abnormalities in several regions of the brain, especially if they had more than three attacks per month.

Women who had been suffering migraines for more than 15 years had the worst brain changes of the group.

Now researchers want to conduct more studies looking at the brain before, during and after migraine attacks.

Experts say these study results could indicate migraine is possibly a progressive brain disease.
