Undergoing gastric bypass surgery can improve pregnancy outcomes for obese women.
Researchers at the Rand Corporation analyzed data from 75 studies that looked at various health issues among women who had bypass surgery.
The researchers found women who had surgery had lower risks of gestational diabetes and high blood pressure. They also had a lower risk for premature birth, and delivering babies who were over, or underweight.
Experts say having surgery helps women improve their health, which in turn improves the health of their babies.
From 1998 to 2005, women age 18 to 45 made up 83% of gastric bypass procedures.
Women who have bypass surgery do have pregnancy risks. The most common complication is an internal hernia.
Surgeons recommend women wait a year after surgery to try to get pregnant.
