Q: It seems to take a while to adjust to exercising in the warmer temperatures we have been having. Do you have any suggestions on ways to make it easier?

A: There are some ways to beat the heat so it doesn’t beat you. We got some perspective from Ally Bowersock, Assistant Professor of Health and Exercise at Jefferson College of Health Sciences.

She says, “Usually, it has a lot to do with hydration. Humidity also plays into it. Drastic weather changes make it more difficult to acclimate.”

Also, pay attention to the foods you eat before exercising.

Bowersock’s suggests that you, “Avoid high sugar foods especially things that are high on the glycemic index. For example, candy, cookies and other things that spike your blood sugar.”

Added 10 On Your Side Tips:
* Eat a very light snack at least an hour before you exercise. (Heat and humidity could increase your chance of stomach upset if you exercise right after eating)

* Wear clothing that wicks the sweat away from your skin to promote your body’s natural cooling mechanism. (Avoid cotton clothing)

* Some foods that promote hydration include: apples, watermelon, and celery (Foods with a high amount of water content)
