With new restrictions being recommended for acetaminophen by the Food and Drug Administration, WSLS 10 did some checking to find out more about the liver damage it can cause.
There are several over the counter products that don't have the word tylenol or acetaminophen but contain the medicine that health officials say can cause serious liver damage.
Karen Lowden, Senior Director of pharmacy at Roanoke Memorial Hospital says, "As they start to look at the products they realized that there are number on the market... combination products that contain high amounts of Tylenol and people may not be aware of how much they are getting over time."
Reading medicine labels is critical. Keep in mind that 1,000 milligrams equals 1 gram. If you get more than 4 grams a day over several days your liver can start to fail.
Signs of an acetaminophen overdose include:
Nausea and vomiting
Leg pain
Yellowing of the eyes
