Helping mom with breakfast -- or any other chores around the house -- might help steer teens away from depression.
This doesn't appear to be just a ploy to get kids to take out the garbage. This is a real study from San Francisco State University, which included surveys of 218 Chinese-American teens. Researchers followed them for two years.
Researchers found that having a sense of family obligation, such as caring for siblings or helping out elders, was good for mental health.
14-year-olds with family obligations reported fewer symptoms of depression by the time they were 16.
