A month long investigation by 10 On Your Side reveals worries about some law enforcement agencies about a increase in heroin use.
Our research found:
Investigators in Roanoke County are investigating two unrelated cases of possible heroin overdoses. Both happened within a few days of each other in early July.
Police in one local city have recorded three heroin-related arrests in 2008, when in 2007 it didn't have any.
An undercover deputy in one local county recently bought heroin. The first such purchase in that particular county in years.
Several police sources attribute the increase in heroin use to the crackdown by federal authorities on Oxycontin.
One ex-addict interviewed for this story agreed with that theory.
"If you can't get Oxycontin, you're going to do everything you can to get heroin because [herion is] the same effect," the woman said.
