The economy seems to be impacting the number of Hokie fans making the trip to the Orange Bowl.
At least check, the university had sold about half its ticket allotment for the Miami game.
The Atlantic Coast Conference is allotted about 18,000 tickets for the Orange Bowl.
Tech is responsible for selling 8,000 of those tickets.
Tech graduate and long-time fan Suzi Summerlin will miss her first ever bowl game.
"Do you have a box of tissues?" Summerlin asked jokingly Friday morning from her Roanoke home.
"It makes me very sad not to be going."
Summerlin said she's missing the game due to a prior commitment, a family ski trip to Lake Tahoe.
As a vice president for the Roanoke Valley Hokie Club, Summerlin said she has talked to a number of other fans missing the game for another reason-- the economy.
"They just felt like they couldn't afford to take their families this year," she said.
Some fans said they didn't have the itch to make the trip this year since the Hokies went to the Orange Bowl last year.
Others said, since the Hokies have made six visits to the Sunshine State over the past 13 months, they just couldn't afford another trip.
