High winds rock the NRV

Wind knocks out power to 19,000+

Strong winds howl through Roanoke

The final hours of 2008 are certainly eventful for some people in our area who are forced to clean up thanks to the wind.

In Pulaski County, gusts reached almost 60 miles per hour knocking over mailboxes and trees.

The wind also knocked out power for nearly 3,000 Appalachian Power customers in the county.

"I looked at my alarm clock and it wasn't on and I checked my phone and my battery was dead where it was supposed to be charging so I got the hint that it was out," said AEP Customer Ashley Cadle.

As of 5:48 p.m. APCO is reporting 1,352 customers are still without power.
