A local nursing home is getting a Norovirus outbreak under control tonight.
Right now, there are 13 cases of the illness at Friendship Retirement Community. They have seen 89 cases since mid December.
It is a highly contagious stomach bug we often hear about on cruise ships and it's common in nursing homes too.
Candy Elliot, Friendship Retirement Community tells WSLS they have been working with the health department to prevent the spread of the illness.
One part of the prevention plan has been to separate ick patients from those who are well.
They also have temporarily stopped group activities and have discouraged outside visitors.
This doesn't mean you can't go visit your loved one at the facility. They are simply taking precautions and you may be asked to wear a mask to try to keep germs from spreading.
Norovirus starts as vomiting diarrhea, and stomach cramps but the symptoms usually last 1 or 2 days and usually there are no long term side effects.
