Ambulance driver rape investigation moves to Carroll County

56 year-old Alton Davis worked for Guardian Ambulance Service in Wythe County for several years transporting adults with disabilities to many places including work.

Now, he's in the New River Valley Jail without bond.

He faces more than a dozen charges in Wythe County ranging from rape to abduction to aggravated sexual battery against three alleged victims.

The charges against him seem to be the talk of the town where he lives. "It's one of the worst things to happen in the area," says Dale Mitchell who went to high school with Davis. "It's just really sad."

The charges are also difficult for Thomas Stroupe who worked with Davis for several years. "He was a good worker. He was an extremely good worker, but I never thought of him being anything like this."

Mitchell adds that Davis was always a loner who "just kind of stayed by himself."

State Police are now investigating similar incidents in Carroll County starting with Davis' home.

According to a search warrant, they took several items including bed sheets, a bed comforter, a call log with a list of victims names, his December work schedule, pillow cases and one VHS tape.

Sgt. Michael Conroy with State Police says all the items taken from Davis' home will undergo forensic examination. In the meantime, his department will continue to look into the allegations against Davis.

It's important to note that while Davis faces several charges in Wythe County, he has not been charged with anything in Carroll County. State Police tell us everything will be turned over to the Commonwealth's attorney, after their investigation.
