Mayor Nelson Harris tells WSLS he asked Alfred Dowe to step down from city council, and calls the whole situation a disappointment.
In an interview with Dowe last Thursday about his spending, Dowe says he spent about $14,000, something the city clerk is supposed to cover.
In recent developments, Harris says he received information on Friday about Dowe billing both the city and the state for his expenses. On Friday night, Dowe went to Harris' house, and Harris says they talked for a couple hours. Harris calls it a conversation that was both honest and painful.
Harris says they also talked about Dowe reimbursing those expenses.
"I don't know what that amount will be. I think that remains to be determined. Alfred assured me last night in our conversation that he certainly wants to do that and will be prepared to do that," said Mayor Harris.
Mayor Harris says a municipal auditor is reviewing all the council members' expenses, and that information will be reported to the council. It will also be public information in about a month. Also, Harris is suggesting the auditor check the council's expenses on a regular basis.
This situation also leaves an empty seat on city council. Mayor Harris says an interim council member will take Dowe's place. Voters will then elect a council member in the May general election.
