Roanoke City Council will appoint replacement for Dowe

Roanoke City Council will appoint someone to replace Alfred Dowe.

Dowe resigned over the weekend after it was revealed that he may have double-billed the city and the commonwealth for travel expenses related to his service on the Board of Directors for the Department of Criminal Justice Services. Dowe has now also resigned from that board.

A judge ruled today (Wednesday) that state code allows for Council to appoint someone to fill the remaining two years on Dowe’s term.

City Attorney Bill Hackworth said the code actually called for the special election to be held in May 2010. But that’s when Dowe’s term expires.

Hackworth did not know how quickly Council will move to replace Dowe, but said he expects them to discuss the process during Monday’s regularly scheduled council meeting.
