House budget team scraps teacher raises

»  Comments | Post a Comment

House budget negotiators today withdrew a proposed 2 percent raise for public school teachers after accusing Senate budget negotiators of "drawing a line in the sand."

Under this scenario, teachers would get no pay raise in the two-year budget, other than raises granted by local governments.House negotiators said they had given up one of their key points, changing the methodology for determining future pay raises for teachers, but the Senate had refused to negotiate over it.

Budget negotiators met until midnight Wednesday night. They said they still hope to complete negotiations by Saturday's scheduled closing date.
