Investigators believe an arsonist started at least five small wildfires on the eastern face of Mill Mountain sometime Sunday evening.

Firefighters said a combination of luck, quick response, and recent rains prevented a full blown forest fire on the mountain.

Investigators spent most of the morning looking for clues at each of the five fires.

The fires were only a few hundred yards apart in most places, and burned a total of about two acres. All of the fires sparked near the Mill Mountain Star Trail.

If you have any information which might help investigators, call the Roanoke Fire Marshal's Office at (540) 853-2795.
