U.S. Marshals in Roanoke are keeping their eyes open for a man convicted of beating and attempting to rape a woman in Oregon, and later escaping from prison during a forest fire.
Oregon authorities arrested Chad Shores in 2003 after a bizarre turn of events. According to police, Shores stalked a former girlfriend despite a number of restraining orders. Then one, night he snuck into her home where he beat her severely and threatened to kill and rape her.
A neighbor overheard the threats and chased Shores from the home using a shovel and trash can lid.
Shores was wearing only his boxer shorts when he fled and later called the woman and demanded his clothes be returned. She called police who set up a sting as he came to get his clothes.
But, he ran when police moved in and forced them to pull him from a tangle of briars that left both Shores and police with numerous cuts.
Shores faced charges of attempted rape and abduction but was sentenced to only 4 years in prison, under a plea agreement.
Then a 10,000 acre forest fire ignited in 2004 and inmates were recruited to help fight it.
Shores was one of the inmates and he escaped, using the smoke from the fire and darkness to aid him.
There had been no sign of Shores until he surfaced in Hawaii earlier this year.
U.S. Marshals say there is some indication Shores may now be in central Virginia where he friends and family.
Anyone who sees the 36 year old Shores, who is slim at 5’11” and 160 pounds and sports a tattoo of a cross on his left shoulder, should call U.S. Marshals at (540)857-2230.
