WSLS offered its third Ten On Your Side Helpline Phone Bank Tuesday night with our engineers answering your questions about the digital transition. Many of the questions from viewers were the same, so I’m answering those questions in this story in the hope that it will help others.
Question #1: If I have cable will I be okay?
WSLS Chief Engineer Ricky Williams says yes.
“If you have cable, you're fine,” he said. “The cable company is going to make the transition for you.”
In fact, the same goes if you have satellite. The only people impacted are those with an older model television getting their picture with antennae. You'll need a converter box to pick up the digital signal.
Question #2: Do I still need an antennae if I get the converter?
In a word: yes.
“This box is a go-between between the antennae and your television set,” Williams explains.
So you'll need both the antennae and the converter.
Question #3: I have the converter and still can't get Channel 10. Why?
This can be a problem and here’s the reason. Our digital signal is being transmitted on a different frequency.
“Because we're transmitting on Channel 30, it's a UHF frequency which is harder to get than the VFH Channel 10 that we're on, some people may have a problem.”
So to fix this you can adjust your antennae or you may need to buy a larger antennae. If you're having this problem, go to www.dtvanswers.com. There they can walk you through this process.
