Friends and family of Wilbur West said the motive behind the 69-year-old church treasurer's murder remained a mystery Monday.
West was found dead Sunday morning at his Lynch Station home.
Friends and family first suspected something was wrong when he never arrived to unlock the Lynch Station Baptist Church Sunday morning for choir practice.
James Mayhew, West's friend and married to his first cousin, said he and another church member found West's body.
"I don't know what the motive was but [Wilbur West] didn't have an enemy in the world," Mayhew said Monday afternoon.
A dispatcher told 10 On Your Side no one would be available from the Campbell County sheriff's office for comment on the investigation until Tuesday.
A call to the Virginia State Medical Examiner's Office in Roanoke inquiring about autopsy results was referred to the sheriff's office.
Mayhew said West's wallet was found on his kitchen table and guns belonging to West's father were still inside the home.
Mayhew said he found West's door unlocked, something he described as "unusual."
Mayhew said investigators told the family they believed West had been dead since sometime Thursday.
