Alphonso Destin, 21, is a familiar face on Leewood Road in Campbell County. Investigators tell us he often stayed at a house, just doors away from the man police believe Destin robbed and murdered, 69-year-old Wilbur West.
"He was just a sweet man. Why would anyone want to take his life?" said Terry Boley, a clerk at the neighborhood convenience store in Lynch Station.
West lived alone in his house. Investigators believe that may be part of the reason he was targeted. It's left people in the small community fearful.
"You don't feel safe when you go to sleep. You don't feel safe goin' out in the yard. You just don't feel safe," said Shirley West.
She and her husband, Aubrey, aren't related to the victim, but have lived on Leewood Road for 10 years.
"We've started locking our doors more and staying in more than what we were," said Aubrey West.
And Terry Boley is paying even more attention to who's coming in and out of the neighborhood convenience store.
"Everybody's scared. Everybody's scared to go outside at night. Everybody's lockin' their doors. Everybody wants to buy guns. It's just, everybody's shocked," said Boley.
"But it's a relief that they have arrested somebody," added Aubrey West.
Alphonso Destin is being held without bond. Sheriff Gaddy hopes this arrest will help people sleep a little bit easier.
"We will not stop until we feel like we have everybody in custody that had anything to do with this crime," Gaddy said a news conference Thursday afternoon.
"And I think there are probably some more out there they're gonna get. And I hope they catch 'em," said Boely.
For peace of mind... and justice for a friend.
