Early morning start for voters in Peters Creek

An expected record number of voters encouraged many of you to head to the polls early. At William Ruffner Middle School in Roanoke, it was 5 a.m. when a line had already formed along the side of the school.

Joe Adkins was the first person in line.

"This is a first for me this early,” he said.

Farther back, more voters were camped out.

"I got my cheese and crackers, my grapes, my wallet, my gloves, and my ID. I'm ready,” said one woman.

For Daniel Hale, Jr., he’s got family…and caffeine.

"With my cup of coffee, my grandson, my baby girl, my son-in law, my wife, and the rest of the community. Having a great time,” he said.

They’re having a good time no matter where they were in line. At 6 a.m., the polls opened and voters cheered.

Inside William Ruffner's gym, voters lined up from one wall to the other. They were one step closer to casting their vote and a relief as they walk out the door, especially for 83-year-old Herman Word.

"When it's time to vote, I vote. And I've never seen it like this. This is marvelous, this is wonderful to see such a turnout as this,” Word said.

The excitement lasted even after the votes were cast.

"It doesn't matter whether you're for McCain or you're for Obama, but you have a right and you should stand in line for two hours and you will make it through,” said Sally Poindexter.
