There were cheers and tears. It was a celebration for the ages many Roanokers say they have waited ages for.

"I'm happy, and I'm overwhelmed. I hope we get the change in the world that helps everybody," Wil Bert, a local Democrat, said.

"I feel like a kid at Christmas time," Lee Graves Jr., a local Democrat, said.

"When he took Virginia, it was the most surreal moment of my life," Joshua Dickerson, a local Democrat, said.

A Kenyan-American who lives in Roanoke, Jebet Kibogy couldn't hold back her tears.

"Thank you so America for giving us a president the world deserves. Thank you so much," Kibogy said.

After a long day at the polls, dozens stuck around until after midnight to see Barack Obama take the stage.

They stood on their feet to hear his acceptance speech and chanted toward the screen as if they were in the crowd.

It was a historic night many are sure to remember for years to come.
