Lynwood “Lyn” Barbour has been elected Danville’s new city treasurer.
Barbour received 7,893 votes, compared to 5,407 for David Giffen and 2,309 for Jackie Wilson, according to unofficial results. About 1,000 absentee ballots are yet to be tabulated, according to Clerk of Circuit Court Gerald Gibson.
“I feel numb, humbled, that the citizens of Danville have put their trust in me,” Barbour said Tuesday night after the votes were tallied in the clerk’s office.
Barbour, 59, is a Danville native who graduated from Danville Community College’s public administration program.
He began working for Danville’s Real Estate Assessment Division in 1970 and worked his way up to director of real estate assessment in 1986. He has since retired.
He is a widower and the father of two grown sons.
Barbour will hold office for the final year in Lynda McDowell’s term.
McDowell left office at the end of 2007 following a fraud investigation that netted her a 33-month prison sentence for embezzlement and other charges. Richard Turner filled in as acting treasurer, but did not run for the permanent post.
Next year’s general election also will have the treasurer spot on the ballot for a full four-year term.
