ROANOKE - Local African-American leaders said President-Elect Barack Obama's victory shatters the ceiling for the black community nationwide.

A few thoughts from 11th District Virginia House of Delegates Onzlee Ware:

"As I tell my friends, [Obama's victory] could not have been possible without all Americans. White Americans. Latino Americans."

"I thought I would see [an African-American President] before I died, but I've gotta be honest with you, it caught me totally by surprise."

"It just reminded me how great this country is and how far we've come with race relations, with gender relations."

"Barack Obama not only signifies [hope] for Black kids, but also for poor kids."

A few words from Rev. Johnny Stone, pastor at Hill Street Baptist Church in Roanoke:

"I always thought 'could it happen (referring to an African-American President)? But I never thought I would live to see it happen."

"There are no more excuses. We know our limits. We know how far we can go. So my question is now what (referring to using this momentum to take on the next challenge in the African-American community)?"
