Teresa Easley wins race for Pittsylvania County treasurer

Teresa Easley beat out two opponents Tuesday in the race for Pittsylvania County treasurer. The race was a special election held to replace Shirley Simpson, who died in May.
“I’m thrilled,” Easley said of her victory over opponents Kate Berger of Gretna and Chad Miller of Dry Fork. “It’s just been a long, long two years.”
“I can’t say enough about the people who supported me,” she added.
Easley ran against Simpson for county treasurer last year and lost.
The unofficial voting tally was 12,758 for Easley, 11,349 for Berger and 4,259 for Miller.
Easley, 56, will serve the rest of Simpson’s four-year term, which is up for election again in 2011. She is a clerk for Pittsylvania County Circuit Court and has worked in county government for almost 30 years.
Easley is a Chatham native and has lived there almost all her life. She graduated from Chatham High School in 1970 and attended Chowan Junior College in Murfreesboro, N.C., and Averett University.
She began working for the county in the commissioner of revenue’s office and then switched to the clerk of court’s office in the early 1980s. Easley has worked numerous positions in the office.
Former Pittsylvania County Treasurer Glenn Brown was appointed as interim treasurer to replace Simpson until Tuesday’s election. Brown opted against running.
The county treasurer’s annual salary is about $80,000, said County Registrar Jenny Lee Sanders.
