PORTSMOUTH, Va. (AP) - Police say a Portsmouth man is charged with killing his father just outside a magistrate's office, where the older man was going to get a restraining order against his son.

Michael Lancaster was charged Thursday with first-degree murder in the stabbing death of 75-year-old Franklin R. Lancaster Sr. A bond hearing is set for Monday and a preliminary hearing for Dec. 15.

Portsmouth Detective Jan Westerbeck says the 54-year-old son followed his father into a General District Court basement hallway where the two argued. She says Franklin Lancaster was stabbed several times in the upper body.

In 1974, Michael Lancaster was sentenced to five years in prison for shooting his father during a family quarrel.
