A man and a woman died from injuries they suffered in separate crashes on Wednesday, Virginia State Police said.

Gary Alexander Meadows, 17, of Oakwood, was heading west on U.S. 460, east of state Route 1020 in Buchanan County, when his pickup truck crossed into the eastbound lane, struck a guardrail and was struck by another pickup at 7:12 p.m., police said. He died at the scene. He was wearing a seat belt, police said.

Faye Ann Hinton, 54, of Norfolk, was struck on South Military Highway, north of Providence Road in Virginia Beach, by a pickup truck at 6:54 p.m., police said. She was outside her car and looking beneath the hood when her car was struck from behind. She died at 9:30 p.m. at a Norfolk-area hospital.

There have been 721 deaths on Virginia highways this year, compared with 925 as of the same date last year, police said.
