We're only 29 days from the election, and things are really starting to heat up in the political world.
Monday night, 6th District Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Roanoke County, squared off with Democratic challenger, Sam Rasoul.
Both were asked questions submitted by PTA presidents and board members from across Roanoke County.
From the outside of William Byrd High School, it may have seemed more like a pep rally than a political debate.
While supporters left the posters and slogans at the door, both candidates brought that energy inside the school auditorium on issues like education.
"Special education funding should be a priority now," Goodlatte said.
"Yes I agree support increased funding for education," Rasoul said.
The economy and energy were also hot topics.
"We've got to look at new industries and an energy revolution is the only way," Rasoul said.
"We need a domestic energy policy and become energy efficient as quickly as possible," Goodlatte said.
It was Rasoul's chance to take on Goodlatte who's ruled the 6th Congressional District roost for almost 16 years.
But whether or not there was a clear winner depeneded on which audience member you asked.
Sage Bassett supported Rasoul.
"Congress needs to be changed and i think he's the guy to do it," Bassett said.
Earnestine Dayton disagreed.
"We are strong supporters of Congressmen Goodlatte, and he did great," Dayton said.
Either way both candidates got the chance to go head to head on the issues, squaring off for the first and only time until the November election.
