Lynchburg City School Board approved several new courses for the 2009-2010 school year during Tuesday’s meeting.
The new offerings, which were unanimously approved, include a medical assistant career tech course and several drama courses.
Ed Dellinger, supervisor for career and technical education, presented information about the medical assistant course to board members.
The course is aimed at fulfilling a local need for health care personnel that is expected to grow 35 percent between 2008 and 2016,
Dellinger said.
Students will learn skills needed to assist physicians in both clinical and business administration duties. The course will be taught by Orthopedic Center of Central Virginia staffers at E.C. Glass High School.
Dellinger said the course will be taught at Glass because the school has a dental lab, EMT equipment and a closer proximity to the Orthopedic Center’s offices. The course will be open to students at both Glass and Heritage High School.
Dellinger said there’s an application process for students who wish to take the course and a $75 fee. Juniors and seniors are eligible for the two-year program. In the first year, the division expects 25 students to participate.
“It’s a win-win,” said Julie Doyle, school board chairwoman. “Its certainly a win for our students. They can have a career right out of high school.”
The board also approved additional drama courses, which officials said over time will strengthen the division’s entire drama program.
“It just provides additional offerings for students,” said Al Coleman, director of secondary education, adding so far staffing is not an issue so there’s no additional cost.
As the drama programs grow, he cautioned there could be an additional need.
“It could be a staffing issue in another year or so,” Coleman said, adding programs are expected to grow at Sandusky Middle School and Heritage High School. “We could be back to you in another year to talk about Heritage High School.”
