Fire burning on Appalachian Trail in Craig Co.

The U.S. Forest Service originally estimated that the fire had burned 50 acres, but now says after closer examination, that number is now 16 acres.

Crews say the fire burning in the Jefferson National Forest in Craig County is about 85% contained.

They are warning neighbors in the Craig Creek valley areas that they will smell and see smoke.

The U.S. Forest Service says the fire is not threatening any private land.

The U.S. Forest Service says a fire burning in the Jefferson National Forest has grown since Saturday.

The Forest Service tells WSLS the flames have scorched 50 acres, as of Sunday night.

According to the Forest Service, the fire is located on Sinking Creek Mountain in Craig County, approximately 12 miles northeast of Blacksburg, Virginia. The fire has burned on both sides of the Appalachian Trail, upslope from the Niday Shelter.

Approximately 40 firefighters are working on the fire.

The Appalachian Trail is closed from State Route 42 to State Route 621.
