Roanoke County Fire & Rescue was dispatched to the 4500 block of Vest Drive just after 1:00 AM Wednesday morning, October 15th.
When fire crews arrived they found smoke showing from all sides of the house and flames coming from the basement door. Crews from the Cave Spring, Clearbrook and Fort Lewis stations responded to this fire and had it under control in about 15 minutes.
The fire was contained to the basement with moderate damage. The rest of the home received minimal smoke damage.
The female resident of this home and a guest were awakened by the sound of smoke detectors blaring. They found smoke filling the house and escaped without injury and called 9-1-1.
The Fire Marshal’s office has completed their investigation and found that lint from the clothes dryer, located in the basement, caught on fire igniting nearby clothing and other combustibles. The damage estimates have been figured to be $20,000 including the house and its contents. The resident has been displaced and is being assisted by the Red Cross.
The Roanoke County Fire & Rescue Prevention Team would like to remind all residents to regularly clean the lint from dryers and keep combustibles at least three feet away. Do not sleep or leave your home while your dryer is running. Additionally, make sure your smoke detectors are in good working order. Had it not been for the smoke detectors awakening these residents, this fire could have had a tragic outcome.
