Authorities say, "He is a very large danger to society," said Greg Burnett of the U.S. Marshals service. The Marshals are assisting state police in tracking down the suspect.
His name is George Raymond Howett. After 20 year in prison for aggravated sexual assault, he was released with an ankle bracelet in January.
He had a job and lived at an apartment complex at 602 Day Avenue. But, on October 10th he cut the bracelet from his leg and left.
"His probation officer did notify me that the bracelet had been removed and they did not know where he was, so I took steps at that time to go get warrants for him failing to re-register, said State Trooper Donna Locklear who is responsible for keeping track of all the registered sex offenders in the city of Roanoke.
The original crime happened in Roanoke in 1988. Authorities tell me he abducted a woman and threatened to kill her with a knife. Police are afraid he could do the same thing again.
Authorities tell WSLS-10 they believe Howett -- who's nickname is Dobie -- was to take a lie detector test soon. He was afraid that he wouldn't pass it.
“Mr. Howett was to be provided with and given a polygraph exam by the state authorities and for some reason he decided he may not pass that polygraph. And decided he would rather go on the run instead of going back to prison for the rest of his life,” said Burnett.
Police say Howett had little money and no car of his own -- but may have found a way out of town.
Still said Burnett, “Somebody's gonna know him, know where he's been living. If someone sees him in the community recognizes his picture, we'd like for them to call the U.S. Marshal office.”
The number for the Marshals office is (540) 857-2230
