Fire burns Bedford Co. home

»  Comments | Post a Comment

FOREST — Bedford County firefighters shut off southbound traffic onto Thomas Jefferson Road from U.S. 221 on Sunday to battle a house fire.

The fire at 1072 Hicks Lane started about 5 p.m., said Chief Monty Coleman with the Forest Volunteer Fire Department.

No injuries occurred and no one was home at the time, Coleman said. The fire started in the kitchen area, he said, though no cause has been determined.

Smoke was still rising from the heavily damaged, two-story structure at 6 p.m. as crews searched the home. Crews remained on site for about three hours.

The road was closed so water from a nearby hydrant could be used to serve the home. Coleman said the hydrant proved valuable during a drought.

Several cars ran over the company’s hoses running from the hydrant to Hicks Lane, which prompted fire officials to close the road, Coleman said. Though it didn’t keep volunteers from saving the house, he said it could lead to the hoses needing to be replaced.

He said motorists should be mindful of not crossing over fire hoses. The exact cause of the fire could be determined today, he said.
