RICHMOND, (AP) - The Virginia Lottery is marking its 20th anniversary this month with a new raffle and other special events.
The first lottery tickets were sold on September 20, 1988.
The only game was a "Match 3" scratch-off ticket that cost a dollar and paid a top prize of 5-thousand dollars.
Now players can choose from dozens of scratch-off games that cost up to 20 dollars and pay as much as a million dollars.
There are five computerized games with jackpots that can reach hundreds of millions.
The lottery is conducting a "20th Birthday Raffle" that will run through September 19 with tickets costing 5 dollars each.
The prize winner gets a million dollars paid out over 20 years.
Unlike the two previous raffles conducted by the lottery, tickets will be unlimited so chances of winning depend on the number of tickets sold.
