Countrywide letter is legitimate

»  Comments | Post a Comment

If you have a mortgage with Countrywide, you may be getting a letter offering protection from identity theft.

WSLS-10 viewer Ray Sheppard of Christiansburg received this letter, saying that his personal information including social security number was sold to a third party by a former employee.

The letter offers an apology and free services to help protect his identity.

Sheppard contacted WSLS-10 to see if the letter was real, or in fact, an attempt to steal his identity.

According to the better business bureau, the letter is legitimate, and required by federal law.

Countrywide did suffer a breach of security that was investigated by law-enforcement and the company.

The lender is offering two years of free credit monitoring by the major credit agencies.

If you receive this letter you should feel free to take advantage of the offer.

The BBB also recommends you check your credit report immediately.
