Shoplifting way up in Roanoke

Thefts are up in Roanoke in 2008 -- especially shoplifting.

People are stealing more in Roanoke this year than last.
Roanoke police report that shoplifting is up 51-percent in the first eight months of the 2008 compared to 2007.
Larcenies in general are up more than 11-percent.
Roanoke police say they will increase the number of plain clothes officers in stores -- especially during the holiday season.
They also plan to increase their effort to educate retailers on how to prevent shoplifting and how to respond when it happens.
