Two local medical centers shut down and patients want to know why. Both the Martinsville Family Medical Center and the Sandy River Medical Center in Axton closed their doors last week. They were part of Central Piedmont Health Services.
Now, signs at both centers say why they are closed.
"Due to current economic circumstances, this facility is closed,” said William DeShazo as he reads the sign. He’s at the Sandy River Medical Center to pick up his medical records.
Although the center is closed to appointments, according to the sign, the Sandy River Medical Center is supposed to be open to give patients their medical records, even for those who went to the Martinsville Family Medical Center.
Ten On Your Side tried to get some more answers on what was going on at the Sandy River Medical Center. When asked if people were coming to pick up their records, a woman who answered the door replied “They’re not here.” However, she shut the door before we could determine if the “they” she referred to were the doctors or the records.
On both signs at the Martinsville Family Medical Center and the Sandy River Medical Center, it shows a telephone number to access records. The number is actually for the Sandy River Medical Center and gave a busy signal every time Ten On Your Side tried to call it.
DeShazo was a patient at the Martinsville Family Medical Center and drove more than 20 miles to the Sandy River Medical Center to get his records. He knocks on the front door, then tries the back door several times, even shouting to people inside.
“Anybody at home? I come to pick up my records,” he called out.
Although somebody opened the door for us minutes earlier, there's no answer for DeShazo.
“Didn't have no warning it was gonna happen, so I'll have to find me another doctor,” he said.
Ronald Lockamy also went to the clinic in Martinsville and wants his records. He also said he didn’t get much notice.
“They called me about two hours prior to the appointment and said they had closed up."
But like DeShazo, Lockamy didn’t have any luck getting somebody to come to the door.
“Well I'll just have to go back home and get on the phone and try to see what happened,” said DeShazo.
And hopefully, these patients will get what they need. When Ten On Your Side gets more information on this story, we’ll be sure to report the updates.
