RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling has joined Attorney General Bob McDonnell is pre-emptive measures to help stem the state's projected $2 to $3 billion budget shortfall.
Bolling has returned nearly $17,000 of unused funds from the current fiscal year and reduced the 2009 budget by 3 percent, or just more than $11,000.
The announcment came Thursday, the same day Attorney General Bob McDonnell said he was reducing his office's general fund budget by 9.1 percent, or nearly $3.8 million.
McDonnell also returned his state car, which he said would save the state more than $5,000 through the end of his term.
And the attorney general and 10 of his executive attorneys also reduced their salaries by 2 percent for the next six months, which should save about $17,000. McDonnell makes $150,000 annually as attorney general.
McDonnell says this economic downturn and sustained uncertainty is forcing Virginia families and businesses to make hard decisions, and the state's government must do likewise.
