A big merger in the local charity scene.
In a news release, Gleaning For The World (GFTW) says it is merging with Thomas Road Baptist Church.
The Lynchburg based charity organization says the move will help it get more life-saving supplies to people in the U.S. and internationally, as well as provide financial stability during the economic downturn. The news release also cited Thomas Road's impact around the globe during the past 53 years under the Falwell family's leadership.
The release quotes Pastor Jonathan Falwell as saying he was impressed with how the Reverend Ron Davidson stepped down as member of a 1,200 member church to start GFTW.
Rev. Davidson says he approached Falwell about the potential of merging back in November. "It just made sense to me that two organizations that share a common goal could be more effective in meeting the humanitarian crises, if we worked together. TRBC has the same integrity and Christian witness we have tried to build at Gleaning. They also have the desire to reach the poor and care for people who are hurting and need help just to survive. Together, we can expand our outreach and touch the lives of more people,” the release quotes Davidson as saying.
“Ron has led GFTW to be recognized for the second consecutive year by Forbes.com as the nation’s top charity in terms of both fundraising efficiency and charitable commitment. I am excited about the opportunity for our church to get involved in providing assistance to many hurting people as well as having new opportunities for sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ with them,” the release quotes Falwell as saying.
