A group of second through sixth graders from Thaxton Elementary School in Bedford County got to cruise on the Virginia Dare at Smith Mountain Lake on Friday, for meeting their Spring reading goals.

Students at Thaxton Elementary School in Bedford County were challenged this spring to Take the Dare, Cruise with Books in 2009.
As part of our Accelerated Reader Program, students in second through sixth grades were given reading goals they had to meet in order to earn a special reward.
Over 80 children, about half of the students in those grade levels, met the challenge and earned the reward.
The younger grades were also working on goals for special rewards. Approximately 145 students in all met their goals for the Spring Reading Challenge.
That equals about 57% of our school and is the largest group to ever meet its goal during a nine week grading period.
