Big bucks from the economic stimulus are going to Carroll County.

A news release from 9th District Congressman Rick Boucher (D) says $7 million will help Hillsville and Carroll County improve water and wastewater systems. Boucher's office says:

The U.S. Department of Agriculture through its Rural Development Agency is awarding Carroll County a grant of $1.2 million and a low-interest federal loan of $5 million to construct a new regional water system, which will serve the 322 homes and businesses and the Wildwood Commerce Park currently under development in the County as well as strengthen the water supply for the entire Carroll County water system. With the federal funds, Carroll County will establish new water transmission lines between the New River Regional Water Authority’s water treatment plant in Austinville and the Carroll County Public Service Authority’s existing water systems. Additionally, the County will construct two booster pump stations and install a water storage tank.

Additionally, the Town of Hillsville will receive $552,900 in Recovery Act funding to replace the wastewater system serving 15 residents and businesses along Cranberry Creek. Currently, the wastewater system serving these homes is failing causing the contamination of Cranberry Creek. This allocation of federal funding will be administered by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality.

“Early this year, I urged that any stimulus legislation should include robust funding for rural infrastructure, including funding to assist communities construct new water and wastewater systems, and a total of $10.2 billion was included in the Recovery Act for new water and wastewater systems nationwide. As a result of this funding, to date the Ninth Congressional District has received more than $31 million to construct new or improve existing water and wastewater systems. The Recovery Act funding being announced for Hillsville and Carroll County today will improve water and wastewater services for residents,” Boucher said in the news release.
