Chris Townsend of Staunton is the writer, producer and director of the edgy movie he's hoping to release this fall. It's about three men and one woman, who he calls misfits, and their plot to kill Barack Obama during the campaign trail in 2008. "They're down on their luck," Townsend said. "They don't have jobs."
He showed me a preview and several scenes from the picture in his Lynchburg editing studio. The scenes I saw showed lots of guns, even using Obama posters for target practice. Townsend filmed all of the movie in Southwest Virginia.
One scene was shot at E.C. Glass High School outside the gym. Townsend says he got permission from the school to shoot here where he shot a pro-Obama rally with actual Obama supporters.
Townsend says the Secret Service threatened to shut his movie down but have backed off after several meetings with them. "Their concern is that this film will ignite someone to make a stupid mistake," he said.
He says they have opened an investigation into him and said they will be monitoring him as the movie progresses.
Townsend says he isn't making the movie just to get attention. "It's not something I set out to make out of shock value or anything like that," he said. "There is a legitimate storyline in this."
When I asked him if the group actually goes through with their plot he said he didn't want to give anything away. But, he said, "The ending will blow everyone's mind. All I'm saying is go into it with an open mind."
Townsend says he knows he's going to get a lot of backlash from the movie but says it'll be worth it if he gets to share with the world what he says is a compelling story.
