The National boy Scout Jamboree will not be coming to Rockbridge County after all.
A news release from the Boy Scouts claims the site in being dropped due to significant restrictions on land use.
"The Goshen site is a remarkable piece of property, and although we believe we can solve the technical issues to make it work, it's simply too restrictive from a land utilization perspective to do what we need to do for the amount of investment that would be required," said Jack Furst, national chairman and lead volunteer for the National Scouting Center, in a news release.
Governor Tim Kaine said in a news release:
“The Commonwealth has a longstanding history of hosting the Jamboree — Fort A.P. Hill has been home to this important event for the past 28 years. We are pleased Virginia had the opportunity to work with the Boy Scouts to try and keep the Jamboree in Virginia.“After much discussion it became clear that the Goshen site in Rockbridge County was just not an appropriate location for an operation of this magnitude. However, I applaud the cooperative spirit that existed between the Boy Scouts, Rockbridge County and the Commonwealth.
“We’re proud of the many Boy Scout troops in Virginia, and we're grateful for the good works they do in our communities. We look forward to working with the Boy Scouts of America in the future.”
Back in February, the Boy Scouts named the Goshen site as their top pick to build a new National Scout Center, and host the 2013 Jamboree.
Another possibility for a new Jamboree location may not be too far from Goshen. The Boy Scouts signed an agreement to buy 10,600 acres of land near Beckley, West Virginia to develop a high-adventure base. Furst said the Boy Scouts will re-examine the property to see if it can support a Jamboree.
