NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - A Suffolk couple have been sentenced for embezzling more than $2 million from a Virginia Beach real estate company.
U.S. District Court Judge Robert Doumar sentenced 47-year-old Karen A. Hiles on Monday to seven years and 11 months in prison. Fifty-nine-year-old James Hiles received two years and six months in prison.
Karen Hiles had pleaded guilty in May to conspiracy, mail fraud, bank fraud and other charges. James Hiles had pleaded guilty to conspiracy.
Prosecutors said Karen Hiles worked as a bookkeeper for a developer of commercial and residential properties. She conspired with her husband to forge business checks and wire transfers from 2002 through 2007.
Prosecutors said the couple used the money to travel, buy vehicles and open a restaurant.
