RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Republican Gov.-elect Bob McDonnell says Gov. Tim Kaine's proposal to end some tax breaks to aid an underfunded state budget won't fly.
Kaine, a Democrat, plans to try again to repeal the "dealer discount," a sliver of the state sales tax merchants keep for collecting and remitting it.
McDonnell said Thursday that he sees no difference between that and a tax increase. He has ruled out any new taxes.
The worst economy since the Great Depression has forced Kaine and the General Assembly to cut about $6 billion from the state budget.
The new two-year budget Kaine will present legislators in two weeks will require an additional $3 billion in budget reductions. Kaine says ending the dealer discount could boost revenues by $70 million a year.
