Updated news release
The Virginia Department of Transportation has postponed the previously announced bridge replacement on Route 649 (Dry Hollow Road) in Roanoke County until spring.
For the past few months, VDOT has been trying to replace the Route 649 bridge over Dry Hollow Branch, but heavy rains and high water in the stream have delayed the work. VDOT previously announced dates to replace the bridge in October, November and December.
“Even though the bridge has reached the end of its life and needs to be replaced, there are no immediate safety concerns, so we plan to reschedule the work next spring when, hopefully, the weather will cooperate better,” says Kristen Williby, assistant residency administrator for VDOT’s Salem Residency Office.
The bridge replacement will require a section of Route 649 to be closed for a day. The exact date will be announced next year.
