Lights are temporarily back on at Mill Mountain Theater

Mill Mountain Theater’s stage has been empty, but now it's coming to life.

Annie Jr. is the first performance since the curtain dropped on “Driving Miss Daisy” in early February.

Since the theater fell on some hard knock times they've only maintained their educational program and Annie Jr. is a product of that.

Ginger Poole, Director of Education, says the kids are serving as a heart beat.

“We've just got that wonderful sense that we're glad there's something happening, we're glad there's still a heart beat, we're glad to see people still in the building, so it's been very positive,” explained Poole.

Right now, there are no plans for anymore junior productions, but that could change depending on the success of Annie Jr.

However, there are plans to re-open the professional stage.

The president of the theater says details on the changes won't come out until probably next summer.

Right now, they're making presentations to strategic partners.

“We hope to roll out with a newly renovated or re-invented Mill Mountain Theater in January 2012,” said Jack Avis, president of Mill Mountain Theater.

According Avis this junior play won't bring in the money professional productions have in the past, but it will bring in something.

“It keeps us out in the public eye. It hopefully will generate some income for us,” Avis said.

Besides learning lines and a few quick moves, Poole hopes these kids change the future.

“I would love to see that these kids are the ones that actually push those doors open back at Mill Mountain Theater and have some future performances,” Poole said.

Tuition from the educational program enrolment paid for the production of Annie Jr.

Opening night is December 10th and it runs through the 20th.
