Bomb plot complicates release of prisoners to Yemen

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Growing evidence that the would-be Christmas Day "pants bomber" Umar Farouk Abdulmuttalab may have been fitted for his explosive device in Yemen. That could complicate the U.S. government's efforts to send more than 80 Yemeni prisoners home from Guantanamo, Politico reports.

That, in turn, could effect Gitmo's closing and change how prisoners are handled at Thomson prison in northern Illinois. Yemenis represent almost half of the remaining 200 prisoners in Guantanamo.

House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) said he would convene hearings in January about the bombing attempt. The incident, he said, could lead some members to question whether Yemenis at Guantanamo should be transferred to Thomson.
