Roanoke city's newest fire station is now up and running -- and it's the city's first "green building".
A ribbon cutting was held this afternoon for fire station three on Williamson Road.
The station houses the engine and ambulance that used to be at the airport fire station.
Traffic at the airport location slowed down response times, and firefighters say moving will help them meet their performance standards.
Chief David Hoback, Roanoke Fire and EMS says, "The upper end of Williamson road really needed to be serviced better and by placing this fire station there it's placed in the community where it needs to be so we can be more efficient and provide better response times."
The 2-point-3 million dollar station is "LEED" certified -- which means it's environmentally friendly.
