Thousands of students in the Roanoke Valley had a lesson in the law today.
Congressman Bob Goodlatte and members of the Virginia Bar Association volunteered their time as part of the "rule of law" project.
The project is aimed at giving students a better understanding of how law applies to daily life, and to encourage students to be engaged citizens.
As both a lawyer and a lawmaker, Congressman Goodlatte says it was important for him to take part in the project.
"I'm here to hear what the kids have to say but also to share some thoughts about why we have laws and why it's important to follow them", says Goodlatte.
The Virginia Bar Association plans to expand the project in the fall, to include schools throughout the state.
